Welcome to Victoria Park Books website  Poetry Course with Claudia Jessop Start date: 8pm, Thursday 22nd January Price: £80 for the term (8 sessions, half term break on 19th February)   Victoria Park Books Basement will be hosting a series of  weekly poetry evenings with local poet Claudia Jessop.  Come and discuss your own poems as well as poems that  you've read, loved and struggled with. With a loose theme  for each session, including "Winter", "Exploring Imagery",  "Places and Spaces" and "Change", the emphasis will be on engaging  with what people themselves bring to the group. This workshop is aimed at both  those who may have felt curious but intimidated by poetry in the past and want to see what   it's  all about, and at people with a longer established place for poetry in their lives. We'll read about  poets' lives and processes, look at other inspiring material relating to their work, watch film clips  and listen to recordings....but most of all, we'll read poems - old and contemporary, from all around  the world - focussing on the (perhaps) familiar and the (perhaps) completely new, in a relaxed  convivial atmosphere. No previous experience of "studying poetry" necessary - just enthusiasm  and an open imagination.  Writing and Illustrating for Children with David Lucas Start date: 9.30 - 5pm, Saturday 24th January (Writing) and Saturday 28th February (Illutrating) Price: £100 per workshop Explore how to write for children with David Lucas in the Victoria Park Books Basement.  Writing for Children: an intensive one day course, covering picture books, narrative structure and  character creation, fairytales, young reader fiction, and novels for 9-12's. There will be tips on  plotting, how to engage a reader and create suspense, we'll look at famous examples of each  genre - and there will be creative exercises throughout the day. It is recommended (but not  essential) that you bring along a text of your own - a work in progress - to discuss. The day will  finish with a discussion about getting work published.  Illustrating Children's Books: an intensive one day course, covering picture books, black & white  fiction and graphic novels. There will be creative exercizes throughout the day and we will look at  tricks to stimulate original ideas, how to create an original and appealing character,   and drawing as storytelling, as well as the more practical business of book-making. We will focus  on line rather than colour, so please bring your own favoured drawing implements - or a range of  graphic art materials (pens / pencils / crayon etc.). Paper will be supplied.  Computers are best kept as just an editing (and colouring) tool - most of the best illustrators still  draw on paper - so no computer expertise is necessary. The day will finish with a discussion about  getting work published - and self-publishing.  Creative Writing Course with Sonia Lambert Start date: 8pm - 9.30pm, Tuesday 20th January Price: £150 for the term (6 sessions, half term break on 17th February) Do you have a story to tell?
